Diversity Dos and Don’ts
Diversity Dos
- Realize that all people buy from people they like, trust and respect…be that person for your clients.
- Be inclusive and diverse. Language references to family, relationship and gender should not be heterocentric.
- Make eye contact and speak directly to the person rather than through a companion or interpreter who may be present. Also, place yourself at eye level when speaking with someone in a wheelchair or on crutches.
- Take time to build relationships with a local church, synagogue, mosque, or other community or religious-based organizations.
- Refrain from stereotypes.
Diversity Don’ts
- Don’t use first names with people until given permission…be more formal.
- Don’t stereotype communities. For example, don’t refuse to meet a client in a neighborhood that you are unfamiliar with….
- Don’t rush your clients or customers to make a decision; allow time to let the them consider the materials.
- Don’t make assumptions about level of experience and competency based on age
- Don’t let your personal views on sexual orientation, race, age or any other dimension of diversity impact your professionalism with the client. All prospects and customers should be treated with respect.
